Entrepreneur Interview
A source of inspiration.
Ian Batten, Founder/CEO of InsectStore.com
When and how did you start your business?
Started my business through the hobby of keeping live insects, and realised there was a market for them online. Started off with a simple website, and then moved to a more professional online store. Lots of sales on ebay as well.
What is your business called, and what does it do?
Insectstore, sells live insects and offers information on keeping live insects.
What inspired you to do that?
I have loved live insects all my life, and wanted to see my site high up in search engines for a very long time
What makes your idea work?
I have a content rich website, with cheap prices on my insects. I try and aim at a new audience, as opposed to an audience which is already knowledgable in the field.
How much money is your business bringing in?
I do it mainly as hobby. Make around £4000 per year, and currently around $160 per month on AdSense.
How is your business marketed?
Marketed on forums, and adwords. Also by word of mouth.
How much time is spent on your business?
I don't spend a lot of time, like I say, it is more of a hobby. I guess a few hours a day updating site with content, and about 3 hrs every Monday sending off orders.
What are your long-term goals?
Long goal terms are for my site to be the king of all insect information websites, and top all others in search engine ranking. Also would like to be one of the largest insect suppliers in the UK.
Is there any advice you can offer to fellow aspiring entrepreneurs?
Work hard, find a niche, and apply all your skills to that niche. Experiment with different markets, and find the one that suits you!
